Rocket League Challenge Season 3 - Week 1 Recap

Week 1 Recap

The Throwdown Rocket League ANZ Challenge is a great off-season event providing more chances for teams to play and earn prizes, and giving opportunities to the teams from OCE to develop as they lead up to RLCS Season 4. Many of the teams have made roster changes, with almost all teams making at least 1 roster swap, and I'm expecting to see these teams grow rapidly as the season progresses.

Week one was so incredibly close, with 3 our of four series going to all 5 games, with multiple overtimes. It's amazing to see everyone so solid despite and it's a good sign that as a region, we are getting stronger. Perhaps by the end of this season, we'll be winning games against EU!

Match 1: You See Me vs Legacy eSports

In a much anticipated rematch from the Open Qualifier, we really wanted to see how You See Me would go with their core roster, and as Legacy eSports dropped the first game 6 - 1, it seemed like it might be a complete turn around from the full sweep by Legacy that happened last week. Legacy eSports found their form and went up 2 - 1, but Kia turned up the heat in the last two games to score 4 goals, and take the series in a game 5 overtime, moving them from a position of scraping into qualifiers to having a foothold at the top of the standings!

Match 2: Billy Fan Club vs Legacy eSports

This is the first time we've seen Billy Fan Club playing in a major since they came back from RLCS. We expected Billy Fan Club to bring new international ninja techniques to the local stage, but that wasn't the case. Trading blows back and forth all the way to game 5, a defensive mistake and a free goal seemed to truly be their downfall, and in a record breaking game against BFC, Legacy ended up 7 - 1 in game 5! This was surely the upset of the day, and blindsided almost everyone.

Match 3: Billy Fan Club vs The Other Team

It was expected that Billy Fan Club would come tilted into this match, coming off a devastating loss. And while they didn't bring their A-game, it didn't feel like The Other Team had fit in with their new player Siki just yet. While the games were tight, including 2 overtimes, Billy Fan Club were able to hold on and make sure they didn't end the week at the bottom of the ladder.

Match 4: Scylla Esports vs JAM Gaming

Scylla Esports and JAM Gaming is the most heated rivalry in OCE, with their last matchup sending JAM Gaming to RLCS at game 7. This series would continue the tradition, and some of the finest Rocket League of the day happened in this match. Scylla Esports took the first two matches, and on top of that, they looked quite dominant. But as soon as JAM Gaming took the 3rd game, there was a definite feeling that the reverse sweep could happen. It would only be reasonable that a matchup of this magnitude would go the distance, and JAM Gaming really showed up in games 4 and 5. With 10 seconds to go, it looked like we'd get the game 5 overtime, but star striker shadey tore the defense asunder as he slammed a shot into the top right corner that was truly undefendable, winning the series with just 5 seconds remaining.
