League Play Week 1: The upsets begin

The biggest Rocket League event of the year truly kicked off with the first week of League Play. 8 Teams, battling over 6 weeks to find who will represent Oceania at the RLCS World Championship in Las Vegas. It’s an exciting time in OCE history, as the teams have shaken things up, rosters have shuffled, and we’re finally finding out how each of the teams stack up next to each other.

Chiefs ESC have remained the dominant team in the region, with Kamii replacing Jake on the roster, any questions were immediately put to rest as they took 2 flawless 3 - 0s, breaking scoring records, and seeing Drippay elevate himself above every other player in the top 8.

On the other end of the scale, the high expectations of ORDER were shook to the core. Going undefeated (7 - 0) in the Group Qualifier put them as one of the favourites, but Avant Gaming, who scraped through the lower bracket of play-ins rose to the occasion and were able to defeat ORDER. This was off the back of the rise of rookie Vive, who struggled with nerves on the play-ins, but truly shone in League Play week 1.

While it feels like Chiefs are a clear front runners, not just for the top 4 finals, but to return to the World Championship for the 4th time, there are still 4 weeks for the rest of the teams to climb the rankings. Tainted Minds debuted a new, aggressive playstyle, which worked against the burgeoning roster of Chimpwits, but is as yet untested against the previous top 4 teams. We have to expect Ground Zero, Legacy, and ORDER all fighting hard for the other spots in the finals, but Avant have truly shook up the competition, so it’s anyone’s game.

Our blockbuster matches this Sunday will see Avant Gaming vs Justice Esports, a repeat of the tight match in play-ins and the chance for one of the teams to move ahead in the pack. Chimpwits vs Ground Zero will have Delusion attempting to prove himself after being dropped from the Legacy roster in the off-season, and ORDER will have the chance to show that it was just nerves last week as they have to try and take down the Chiefs.
